History: We had reached our maximum capacity for cats the day we met Charlie. His owners relinquished him due to allergy issues with a new baby. He sat in the steel cage with his face pressed into the back corner. There was no way that we could leave this 11 year old boy behind.
About: We put Charlie in a foster room with another cat, Boots, who had a very hard time the year before when he was surrendered by his owner. In fact, we almost lost Boots due to his depression and lack of eating. He started to go into liver failure, but we luckily were able to nurse him back to health.
We felt this would be a perfect roommate for Charlie. Charlie spent the first week hiding in the closet and eating a bare minimum. The next week, we had to put him into a dog crate just so we could monitor his eating and try to work with him. He started to come around, but would still retreat into his closet. Boots started jumping on the top shelf of the closet like he was taking watch.
We had convinced ourselves that maybe he was just a really shy cat that hadn’t had too much socialization. You would have thought we would know not to make assumptions about cats by now.
One day, we entered his room to find Boots and Charlie watching the birds outside. Charlie ran up to us and started running and purring. This large, friendly personality had emerged. He loves to sit on laps. He is so kind to other cats. He has never hid since that time and is the first cat to come up and greet people.
Charlie will make the perfect loyal companion, snuggle buddy, listener of problems, and reminder that there is a survivor in all of us.
